How to Send Marketing Emails to Customers for Upcoming Leagues and Events

Want to promote an upcoming golf league, event, or special offer to your existing customers? There are two ways to send marketing emails to customers using Birrdi and Square: Square Marketing and Birrdi Announcements.

Both options allow you to reach customers, but there are important differences in how they work, particularly when it comes to customer eligibility and marketing opt-ins.

Option 1: Square Email Marketing

Square Marketing is a dedicated marketing platform that allows businesses to create, schedule, and track email marketing campaigns.

With Square Marketing, you can:

  • Create branded email campaigns.

  • Target specific customer segments.

  • Schedule marketing campaigns in advance.

  • Track campaign engagement and performance.

  • Automate recurring marketing campaigns.

Important: Square Marketing Requires Customer Opt-In

One limitation of Square Marketing is that customers must be opted in to receive marketing communications.

Birrdi cannot automatically opt customers into Square Marketing because Square does not provide an API for managing marketing consent.

This means that even though your customers may exist in Square, you might only be able to send marketing emails to a portion of them.

One workaround is to enable Square Loyalty. Customers who enroll in Square Loyalty can become eligible to receive marketing communications through Square, helping expand your reachable audience.

Note: Square Marketing is a separate Square service and may require a paid subscription.

For detailed setup instructions, follow our guide:

Option 2: Send Announcements Through Birrdi

With Birrdi's built-in Announcements feature, you can send marketing messages directly to your customers without the same Square Marketing opt-in limitation.

Birrdi Announcements are sent through two channels:

  1. Email: Customers receive the announcement directly in their email inbox.

  2. Birrdi Messages: Customers can also view the announcement in their Messages tab after signing in to their Birrdi account at app.birrdi.com/u/messages.

Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link, allowing customers to opt out of future marketing emails and stay in control of the communications they receive.

Step 1: Navigate to Customers

  1. Log in to your Birrdi Admin dashboard.

  2. Click Customers in the top navigation menu.

  3. You'll see your existing customer list.

Step 2: Filter Your Customers

Before sending an announcement, you can sort and filter customers based on who you want to reach.

Available sorting options include:

  • Most Recent Visit / Least Recent Visit: Reach recent visitors or reconnect with customers who haven't visited in a while.

  • Most Bookings / Least Bookings: Target your most active customers or those with fewer reservations.

  • Most Lifetime Spend / Least Lifetime Spend: Identify customers based on their total spending.

You can also filter customers by type, including:

  • Public customers only

  • Members

  • Other available customer segments

For example, if you're promoting an upcoming golf league, you may want to target past customers who have made reservations but haven't yet joined a membership or league.

Step 3: Select Your Customers

  1. Locate the checkbox next to the Name column header.

  2. Click the checkbox to select all customers currently listed.

  3. Alternatively, select individual customers using the checkboxes next to their names.

Once customers are selected, the Send Announcement button will appear.

Important: Each announcement is limited to 100 customers at a time. If you need to reach more than 100 customers, divide your audience into separate groups and send additional announcements.

Step 4: Compose and Send Your Announcement

  1. Click Send Announcement.

  2. Write your marketing message.

  3. Include relevant details such as your league start date, registration deadline, pricing, and signup link.

  4. Review and send your announcement.

Your selected customers will receive the message via email, and it will also appear in their Birrdi Messages tab.

Which Option Should You Use?

Choose Square Marketing if you're looking for a dedicated email marketing platform with automated campaigns, advanced marketing tools, and performance tracking. Keep in mind that only customers eligible to receive marketing communications through Square can be contacted.

Choose Birrdi Announcements if you want to quickly reach your existing customer base without relying on Square's marketing opt-in system. This is particularly helpful for promoting upcoming leagues, events, special offers, or facility announcements.

For larger audiences, simply send multiple announcements in groups of up to 100 customers.

Our recommendation: If you're promoting a league that starts soon, Birrdi Announcements is a convenient way to reach your customers directly. Include a link to your league registration page so recipients can register immediately.

All Birrdi marketing emails include an unsubscribe link, ensuring customers can control whether they receive future marketing communications.
