Setting Up a Credit Plan

Updated over a month ago

A Credit Plan defines how credits behave in Birrdi.

Credits typically represent free time (ex: 1 credit = 1 free hour). These rules control how credits are issued, used, limited, and expired.

⚠️ Important:
You should create a separate credit plan for each membership or punch pass.
The rules you define inside the credit plan will automatically apply when it is attached to a membership or punch pass. Think of the credit plan as the “logic engine.” The membership or punch pass simply uses that logic.

Here’s a clean, clear Intercom article you can use:

Fields Explained

Name

This is the internal name of your credit plan.

Examples:

  • “Unlimited Member – 1 Hour Daily”

  • “5 Hour Punch Pass”

  • “2 Hour Weekday Member”

Choose a clear name so you know exactly how it behaves later.

Description (Internal Only)

This description is not shown to customers.

Use it to explain:

  • How the credits work

  • Any restrictions

  • Why this plan exists

Example:

2 credits per day, resets daily. Credits expire monthly on renewal.

Initial Credit Supply (Upon Signup)

This determines how many credits are given when the membership starts or when the punch pass is purchased.

Example:

  • 1 credit (1 free hour)

  • 5 credits

  • 10 credits

For memberships, this applies when the member first signs up.
For punch passes, this is the total credit supply when they first signs up.

Max Daily Credits

This sets how many credits can be used per day.

Examples:

  • 1 credit per day → Member can only book 1 free hour per day

  • 2 credits per day → Member can book up to 2 free hours per day

  • Leave aligned with your business rules

This is useful for:

  • Preventing unlimited daily usage

  • Controlling peak hour usage

  • Creating “1 hour per day” style memberships

Credit Increment

This controls how credits are deducted.

Options:

  • 1.0 increments (full hour)

  • 0.5 increments (half hour)

Important:

  • If your simulator uses 1-hour time blocks, you must use 1.0 increments.

  • If your simulator supports 30-minute bookings, you may allow 0.5 increments.

⚠️ This setting cannot be changed after the credit plan is created.

Expiration Rule (Memberships Only)

This setting applies to memberships only, not punch passes.

You can choose whether credits:

  • Expire upon renewal (recommended for most memberships)
    OR

  • Roll over into the next billing cycle

Use expiration if:

  • You want “use it or lose it” memberships

Use rollover if:

  • You want accumulated value memberships

Membership vs Punch Pass Behavior

Membership

  • Credits renew based on billing cycle of the membership

  • Expiration rules apply

  • Daily usage limits can control behavior

Punch Pass

  • Credits are given once

  • No renewal

  • No expiration rule from this setting

Best Practice

Create one credit plan per product.

For example:

Product

Credit Plan

1 Hour Per Day Membership

1 Credit / 1 Per Day / Expire on Renewal

10 Hour Punch Pass

10 Credits / No Daily Limit

2 Hour Premium Member

2 Credits / 2 Per Day / Rollover

This keeps your system clean and predictable.

Why Credit Plans Matter

Credit Plans define:

  • How much free time someone gets

  • How often they can use it

  • Whether it resets

  • Whether unused credits carry forward

Once attached to a membership or punch pass, those rules are enforced automatically by Birrdi.
