Fallback to Static Pin Codes During Remote Lock Outages

How to respond to remote lock outages by switching to static pin codes in Birrdi.

Updated over 4 months ago

Overview

If pin codes are not being sent to your door locks, it likely means Remote Lock is experiencing downtime. This can happen from time to time due to third-party service outages, temporary account access issues, or API disruptions.

This guide explains how to set up and use static pin codes as a fallback, so you can maintain access even during Remote Lock outages.

1. Why Static Pin Codes Matter

During a Remote Lock outage:

  • New pin codes may not be generated or delivered.

  • You may lose access to the Remote Lock dashboard entirely.

  • Birrdi cannot communicate with Remote Lock to update or remove codes.

In these cases, your only fallback is a pre-created static pin code that already exists inside Remote Lock.

2. You Must Prepare Ahead of Time

This fallback only works if you’ve created a static pin code in Remote Lock before the outage. If you haven’t set this up and you’re locked out, this method will not work.

We strongly recommend:

  • Log into your Remote Lock dashboard when it’s functioning normally.

  • Create a static pin code for emergency use.

3. Static Pin Code Format Requirements in Birrdi

If your lock requires a prefix or postfix (like a # at the end of the code), you must include that in the static pin code manually when entering it in Birrdi.

For example:

  • If your lock requires a pound sign: enter 1234#

  • If your lock requires a start key: enter *1234

Birrdi will not append these characters automatically, so it's your responsibility to input the complete expected format.

4. Action Steps

  • Create a static pin code in Remote Lock

  • Add that pin in Birrdi under your location’s fallback settings

  • Test it during non-critical hours

5. Final Notes

  • You only need to create this once, but make sure to keep it up to date if you change lock hardware or code requirements.

  • If Remote Lock is down and you don’t have a pre-created static pin, there is no way to send a new code until the service is restored.

This article is meant to help you prepare in advance. If you're currently locked out and haven't created a fallback code yet, please contact Remote Lock support directly.

6. Where to Find the Fallback Code in Birrdi

Click the simulators tab in the top menu bar, and then click the gear icon next to the name of your simulator.

Scroll down to where it says Override Remote Lock Pin Code.

This field is where your static fallback pin code is stored. It’s used only when you enter a code there.

  • To update the fallback code: type a new code into this field and click Save.

  • To remove the fallback: simply delete the code from the field and click Save - the fallback will no longer apply.

  • ⚠️ If your lock requires a pound sign (#) or other special characters, be sure to include them manually in the code you enter. Birrdi does not modify or append formatting.

Important Reminder

Birrdi does not automatically detect when Remote Lock is down.

  • As soon as a code is entered into the Override Remote Lock Pin Code field, it will be used immediately, whether Remote Lock is working or not.

  • You cannot rely on Birrdi to switch over to a fallback automatically.

  • When Remote Lock is down, you must manually enter the fallback code into this field.

  • When Remote Lock comes back online, you must manually remove the fallback code by clearing the field and saving.

Always manage this field intentionally. Leaving a static code in place after Remote Lock is restored can lead to access issues or confusion for future guests.
