Birrdi recommends using Remote Lock for fully automated access control. However, we understand that some operators prefer to keep their existing lock systems or don’t want to integrate via API.
For those cases, Birrdi offers Manual PIN Codes — a flexible, lock-agnostic option that works with any lock system that accepts PIN codes.
This allows Birrdi to automatically send access codes to customers without changing your hardware or workflows.
What Are Manual PIN Codes?
Manual PIN Codes let you define a pool of static PIN codes that already work with your lock system. Birrdi will then:
Automatically include a PIN code in booking confirmation SMS and emails
Rotate through your provided codes when sending access details
Leave full control of the lock system and code management with you
This option does not require an API integration and works with any lock brand or system that supports PIN entry.
When Should You Use This?
Manual PIN Codes are a good fit if:
You already have a lock system you’re happy with
Your locks accept PIN codes
You want customers to receive access details automatically
You’re comfortable managing PIN rotation yourself
If you want automatic activation, expiration, and tighter security, Remote Lock is still the best option. Manual PIN Codes prioritize flexibility over automation.
How to Enable Manual PIN Codes
Go to the Simulators tab in the top menu bar
Click the gear icon next to your simulator
On the left sidebar, under General & Cancel Policy, locate Manual Lock System
Enable the Manual Lock System option
Enter a list of PIN codes that already work with your lock system
Save your changes
Once enabled, Birrdi will begin including PIN codes in customer confirmation messages.
How PIN Codes Are Used
PIN codes are selected from the pool you provide
Codes are sent via SMS and email in booking confirmations
Codes remain valid until you remove or rotate them
Birrdi does not generate, expire, or deactivate codes
Important Tradeoffs (Pros & Cons)
This feature is intentionally flexible, but it does come with responsibility.
Pros
Works with any lock system that supports PINs
No required hardware changes
No Remote Lock subscription
Lower barrier for operators evaluating Birrdi
Cons
PINs are not auto-generated
PINs are not auto-expired
Birrdi does not rotate or deactivate codes
You are responsible for manually rotating PINs
Codes remain valid until you remove them
In short: this is not as strict or automated as Remote Lock — and that’s by design.
Security Best Practices (Recommended)
If you use Manual PIN Codes, we strongly recommend:
Rotating PIN codes daily or weekly
Removing unused or compromised codes immediately
Using longer PINs if supported by your lock system
Auditing your PIN list regularly
Why We Built This
Birrdi’s goal is not to force operators into specific hardware choices — it’s to remove friction from bookings.
Manual PIN Codes allow you to:
Keep your existing lock system
Avoid expensive or unwanted integrations
Still deliver a professional, automated customer experience
This feature exists to support flexibility, not replace Remote Lock.
