Custom Events vs Events: What’s the Difference?

Two separate products with very different purposes

Updated over 2 months ago

Custom Events and Events are two completely separate products in Birrdi. They serve very different purposes and do not interact with each other.

Understanding which one to use is critical—especially for simulator businesses.

Custom Events (Most Simulator Businesses Use This)

If you run a simulator business, 99.9% of the time you should be using Custom Events.

What Custom Events Are For

Custom Events are used to block your tee sheet. They directly affect bay availability and are the correct tool when you need to reserve or block bays for any reason.

Common Use Cases

Use Custom Events when you need to:

  • Block bays for leagues

  • Block bays for lessons or clinics

  • Block bays for tournaments

  • Block bays for holidays

  • Block bays for maintenance or private use

  • Temporarily remove availability from your tee sheet

Because Custom Events block time on the tee sheet, they are the correct way to reserve bays and control scheduling.

💡 Custom Events are also a valid way to run leagues if you want fixed times blocked off on the tee sheet.

(There are other ways to run leagues—such as memberships with membership rates—but that’s a separate topic.)

Events (A Separate Product)

Events are a completely separate product and do not sync with your tee sheet at all.

What Events Are For

Events are designed for:

  • Taking pre-payment up front

  • Managing attendees

  • Tracking inventory

  • Handling check-ins

They are not tied to bay availability and will not block or reserve bays.

Common Use Cases

Use Events when:

  • You are hosting a party that requires prepaid tickets

  • You are selling tickets to a venue-wide event

  • You need attendee management without tying it to bay scheduling

  • The event is about access to your venue, not specific bays or tee times

🚨 Important Reminder

Creating an Event will NOT block your tee sheet.

If bays need to be unavailable:

  • You must use a Custom Event

  • Events alone will not affect availability

Many issues arise when Events are mistakenly used to try to block bays—this will not work.
