Applying Gift Cards to Membership Signups

Updated this week

Gift cards are the recommended way to offer discounts on memberships in Birrdi.

While promo codes cannot be applied to memberships, gift cards can be used during signup when configured correctly.

How Gift Cards Work with Memberships

Gift cards can be applied only at the time of initial membership signup, and only if the membership allows it.

Important Notes

  • ✅ Gift cards apply to the first charge only

  • ❌ Gift cards do not apply to future recurring payments

  • 🔁 After signup, the member’s credit card on file will be charged automatically going forward

How to Enable Gift Cards for a Membership

  1. Navigate to Memberships

  2. Open the membership plan you want to edit

  3. Find the setting “Allow Gift Card Payments”

  4. Set this value to Yes

  5. Save the membership

Once enabled, customers will see the option to apply a gift card during signup.

What Customers Experience at Checkout

When signing up:

  • Customers can enter a gift card code

  • The gift card balance is applied to the initial membership charge

  • Any remaining balance follows standard gift card rules

On future billing cycles:

  • The membership renews automatically

  • Charges are made to the customer’s saved credit card

  • Gift cards are not reused

Best Practices

  • Use gift cards for:

    • Promotions

    • Prizes

    • Manual discounts

  • Clearly communicate that gift cards apply only to the first payment
